Lean Forward To Improve Acceleration For Soccer

Since most sprints on the soccer field are an average of 20 to 25 yards, the soccer player should focus more on explosion and acceleration. This is why I am a big fan of the lean and run drill. It is a very simple drill, but it is incredibly effective in teaching you how your body should be positioned when you are accelerating to the ball. There is no exercise equipment needed. All you need is some grass or turf to run on. Standing tall with your feet square and shoulder width apart, you simply need to lean forward and fall into a running position. As you fall into a running position drive one knee up and use that knee to accelerate into a sprint forward.  This is the key to powerful acceleration. Your body and center of gravity will be slightly in front of your feet, which will help create greater acceleration and force going forward.This, accompanied with proper arm action and hip drive will produce very good results. You can incorporate this drill 3-4 times a week prior to starting your training sessions. Keep your sprints within 25 yards, focusing on acceleration. With proper acceleration techniqe, you will be amazed at powerful you will be when you explode to the ball.
