Backpedal, Sprint, Kick, Turn and Go

The following drill is designed to simulate a game situation in a controlled manner. The athlete should concentrate on proper form as well as accelerating, decelerating and accelerating again with power. Each repetition should be performed at a faster rate. The team should be broken into groups of 6-8 players for each drill to minimize the rest period. Each drill should be performed 3-5 times each way. Perform the drills to one side and then the opposite. Do not alternate the direction. Technique: Place two cones approximately 10 yards apart. Athlete begins at the front cone and backpedals. When the Coach rolls the ball towards the athlete, they plant the back foot and run forwards kicking the ball back to the Coach. The athlete then turns and sprints past the back cone. The key is to stay low in the backpedal with the knees and hips bent and head and chest up.
